Team Papa is supporting the HAM activities for the Centenary of Dardanelles Campaign at the First World War known as The Great War. The Gallipoli Campaign, also known as the Dardanelles Campaign, the Battle of Gallipoli or the Battle of Çanakkale. The sea and land combats took place on the Gallipoli Peninsula where is located at the North-West of Turkey, forms the northern bank of the Dardanelles Strait. The strait had a strategic importance at the war, as it is the only marine path to Ottoman Capital Istanbul and Russia through Blacksea. The Dardanelles front-line is one of the most important progresses in the Great War affecting the history of Europe.
The campaign was one of the greatest Ottoman victories during the war and a major Allied failure. It brings about the Turkish National Independence warfare and said to be the one of the most significant progresses to the historical path to the establishment of modern Republic of Turkey. Moreover the Campaign is a story of heroism and bravery for both parties. Especially the ANZAC troops had many casualties and the Battle has special significance for Australians. We respectfully remember the words of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk after the war :
“Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours… you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well.”
